The article I would like to reflect on is Melissa Delaney’s “What is Web 3.0, Really, and What does it Mean for Education?” where Tim O’Reilly, Karen Castor and Shelly Black-Plock weigh in with their take on what the future of the internet may hold for education. I found many items of interest that revealed the original uses of our internet to the more complex data driven acquisition for which we are headed. It brings to light the positive possibilities that Web 3.0 hold for the future of our educators.
To truly understand what Web 3.0 is I needed to research back to the beginning of internet use. I am luck that I was able to watch and learn along the way as our World Wide Web grew and has become an ever day tool of life. Web 1.0 (1989 – 2005) was the basic one way road where you could read and learn from the read only text left by others. Web 2.0 (2005 -present) what we currently recognize is more of a two way road. Users are able to make interactions with each other and with web pages. The next logical step is Web 3.0 which is to be believed close if not parts have already come to premonition.
Web 3.0 will gather and connect essential material that is data classified based on the users interactions on the web. The data is tracked and lifestyle patterns are recognized. So how will this affect education. I think O’Reilly really made a good point when he said, “Schools are going to have to catch up to what’s happening in the real world. There’s a real need for teachers to become conversant with new media, and IT.” When our schools were shut down due to Covid the teachers and students that were tech savvy were the most successful. With use of the internet teachers were able to get their lessons out to the students and students were able to complete their assignments.
As schools move forward technology only becomes more urgent. While the curriculum has not changed 2+2 still equals 4 but the way students interact with the teacher, each other and the process in which to get the information out has. Web 3.0 will offer a more personalized education that is data driven and where the teacher can lead the student to a successful education.
